Goal setting in 2020. I don’t know about you, but as we moved towards the end of 2019, I have to admit that I was feeling a little jaded and burnt out after a really hectic (and mostly awesome) year.
It’s hard to believe that yet another year has passed while I’m working full steam ahead on maintaining a balance of running a business alongside being a wife and mum. I find myself falling into 2020 still trying to catch up with what’s happened in 2019, and with this nagging, guilty feeling that I’m supposed to be setting some ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ for next year.
I’ve decided that I’m not going to fall into my usual trap of setting myself an unrealistic guilt-driven goal (like losing 25KG and running a mountain marathon!) but I would like to take a few moments to stop myself, and you, and share a few thoughts and reflections about what we can do to stay fresh, healthy and positive in 2020…
If your goal is to improve your sleeping, It’s not just about how much sleep you get but it’s about the quality of your sleep. It can be argued that there is a link between sleep deprivation and many physical diseases. Good quality sleep at night has healing qualities yet most of us report that we generally don’t get enough of it!
The mind is a very powerful tool – it can be used to build something beautiful and unfortunately it can be used to destroy as well. There is a clear link between our mindset and our physical health. How stressed are we feeling and how do we deal with that stress? It’s part of our everyday life and we tend to attach ourselves to our everyday problems. I don’t know about you, but I spend much of my time engulfed in everyday life and the issues that come with it.
This is a great time to stop for a while, wind down and think about what you are going to do for ‘yourself’ over the next year. It could be faith based, meditation, pursuing a personal hobby (or committing to spend more time on it) or focusing on your personal and career development. Whatever it is, see if you can commit to something that feeds your emotional/mental health in a positive way.
This is the one that I’m forcing myself to write about, it’s the bitter and ugly truth because it is difficult. But through self-discipline we are able to set our goals and focus on them (losing a few pounds and running a mountain marathon are possible yet!). It’s not about pigging out over Christmas and then going on the Keto diet out of guilt, but about maintaining self-discipline, balance and mindfulness from the start. It could be self-discipline to get to bed on time, get up in good time, eat/drink healthy, spend less time on our devices, more time with our family, focus on achieving our goals…
