Name: Nicky West

Company: Martha Trust Hereford Ltd

Course: Advanced Management Programme

Martha Trust Hereford Ltd is a health and social care provider for people with profound and multiple learning and physical disabilities. It lacked strategic direction, and needed to revisit its vision and values.

Nicky wanted to increase her understanding of organisational strategy, values, change management and behaviours and to explore her own resilience, drive and her own personal behaviours. This was so she could increase her motivation to support organisational change, culture, behaviour and contribute to establishing the organisation’s vision and values.

Nicky’s thoughts

I had the opportunity to question, reflect with others and to look at the application of the sessions into practice and to explore others’ approaches with them. The course gave us information, pointers and direction and examples that we could use in practice.

There were also challenging questions and opportunities for analysis, suggestions for self-care and personal awareness for resilience. There were common themes including recruiting for values; toxicity versus qualities; coaching and mentoring. The style of the course with breakout group-work and participative sessions which worked well and I feel all the participants gained more from each other through this.

The tutors were highly knowledgeable in their specialist areas and facilitative and motivational in their styles. I felt they had a good measure of the group’s pace, capabilities and different levels of experience.

Applying the learning

I hope to explore team profiling to harness a useful awareness for greater team working and alignment within groups. I want to explore the value of models of grief and bereavement work to complement the Kubler-Ross model of change.

I am hoping that my learning will give me greater confidence in my management and leadership role and will help me to manage change and to influence the cultural and organisational changes needed within my workplace.

Verdict

I would recommend this challenging and motivating course to all managers and leaders across a breadth of sectors. The course draws from a wide perspective and wealth of knowledge and experience.

The tutors’ skills come from the specialist fields of management and leadership, and they translate into valid, relevant and useful learning. This means we can influence organisational culture and bring about change through motivating staff groups and enhancing the performance of the workforce.
