Continuing our series of blogs on motivation in the workplace, we explore the differences between low motivation and high motivation workplaces. Low motivation workplaces have very different cultures to high motivation workplaces, and they also approach situations differently. In this article, we will explore what some of these differences are.
As mentioned in our recent blog article on motivation, the presence of high-performance teams is one of the key differences between a low motivation workplace and a high motivation workplace. Low motivation workplaces will be made up of teams, however high motivation workplaces will be made up of high-performance teams. High-performance teams will only be prevalent within a high motivation workplace. In order to be a highly focused, results oriented team that can achieve superior business results than other teams, they need to be highly motivated. This is why motivation is one of the key factors behind a high-performance team.
High motivation workplaces will achieve more results and a higher level of productivity, due to a higher level of motivation from their key staff members. Staff members will have a shared sense of purpose and understanding of what they are working towards as a team. In contrast, a low motivation workplace will suffer from lower productivity and less results due to problems with staff engagement and staff retention. Low motivation can prove to be very detrimental to a business in the forms of low job satisfaction, low staff engagement and higher employee turnover. The concept of quiet quitting is currently trending, and this is a clear product of low motivation within the workplace.
High motivation workplaces will work towards goals that are closely linked to the priorities of the business. The teams have a clear understanding of what their roles are and how they play into achieving the vision of their organisation. They won’t waste any time working towards goals that aren’t relevant or needed by the wider business. However, low motivation workplaces won’t work towards the goals of their business. The teams within the business may not even be aware was the goals of their business are, and therefore they will not be reflected in the goals that they set themselves; as they won’t have an understanding of where their roles play into achieving the vision of their organisation.
