Coaching Masterclass for Leaders
The Coaching Masterclass for Leaders workshop will provide leaders and managers with the confidence to use coaching in their day to day interaction with colleagues or clients. We will introduce the role and purpose of coaching and enable participants to practice and receive feedback on a range of effective coaching tools. The course will also explore the skills associated with coaching and facilitating in the team environment, and how coaching can be used to engage colleagues, align goals, and provide a method to manage difficult conversations.
For participants with more experience of coaching, we will differentiate our approach to ensure they benefit from some current thought leadership in coaching practice, informed by up to date organisational research relating to the effectiveness of coaching in enhancing individual and team performance. This will include a consideration of coaching different personality types, and how to identify and coach people with diverse strengths and capabilities within the team environment.

About the Programme
The course will provide participants at any level with an up to date insight into how to coach and mentor colleagues. For experienced leaders, it will provide vital tools that will enhance their management ability both one to one, and in relation to how they facilitate teams.

Through interactive presentations and open discussion, the facilitators will deliver a thought-provoking session, providing you with the key information, details and facts needed in an engaging and memorable environment:
On completion of this module, delegates will be able to:
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the underpinning principles of coaching and mentoring, differences in roles, processes and environment, and different interpretations of the methodology of coaching and mentoring
- Demonstrate good professional practice as a coach or mentor, including an awareness of contracting, confidentiality, ethics
- Use a profiling tool to identify client strengths and personality type, and adapt approach to meet client needs
- Apply models of coaching and mentoring
- Demonstrate the ability to align different tools to the needs of the client
- Conduct a professional coaching conversation with a client
- Apply coaching practice to the team environment, and use coaching skills to facilitate
Session 1
The day will cover the following elements:
Contracting and ground rules for the session, and why this process may support your coaching practice. We will conduct this as a group exercise for the day, and then discuss the merits of agreeing a coaching contract or ground rules with coaching clients.
Explore the role and purpose of coaching and mentoring in the development of people, and as enablers of delegation and empowerment. The mutually supporting skills of coaching and mentoring will be discussed within the context of situational leadership.
Examine and use a range of simple but highly effective coaching tools, methods, and concepts, including GROW (Goal, Reality, Options and Will do). We will identify a variety of coaching tools that will appeal to people with different preferences.
Apply principles of positive psychology to energise and engage colleagues. Consider the impact of positivity in optimising individual and team motivation. We will discuss how coaching can be used to support the motivation and engagement of individuals and teams.
We practice taught skills in a safe and supervised environment.

Alex Firmin
Tutor
Alex is an experienced and dedicated education consultant and trainer. His core skillset is the design and delivery of engaging personal and professional development programmes. He is adaptable and comfortable working at any level in the organisation, from front line leaders to the Board.
Prior to working in consultancy Alex was an army officer (making it to Major). A natural diplomat, Alex studied Pashto (the language of Southern Afghanistan) and held a leadership role in supporting reconstruction and development, primarily in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Alex supported the development and delivery of the army’s global Security, Leadership and Strategy programme, and later worked to establish the curriculum for Afghanistan’s Officer Training Academy, in Kabul.
Alex has built a consultancy business and delivered a diverse portfolio of organisational development projects. He works across all sectors and his clients include the NHS, NATO, Barnardo’s, Home Bargains, a variety of Academy Trusts and schools, and many smaller businesses and charities. Alex has worked closely with the Chartered Management Institute, and routinely lectures on MBA and Director Development programmes for the Universities of York, Chester, and East London. Alex maintains a high level of currency and is currently developing programmes focussing on Distributed Leadership, and Managing Neurodivergent Colleagues.
Alex holds three Master’s degrees: Educational Innovation, Psychology, and Occupational Psychology. He is married to Katherine and has two children and two Labradors.
James Willerton

James has extensive experience in commercial and operational roles as a leader within high-growth SME
environments.
Initially working within executive recruitment within the construction industry, he has also consulted
with all sizes of organisations across multiple sectors. James brings a pragmatic, thought-provoking and
experience-led perspective to address the challenges faced by leaders today.
He supports leaders to distribute decision making and deploy coaching practice in order to achieve
sustainable growth and empower the organisation throughout.
