How Richard Cook, Senior Director – Economics at Pegasus Group, strengthened his leadership approach through our Senior Leadership Programme
Pegasus Group is a multidisciplinary development consultancy providing services across planning, design, environment, economics and infrastructure. As Senior Director - Economics, Richard Cook supports a growing team through project oversight, data analysis, management responsibilities and day-to-day operational support.
Having led a team for more than ten years, Richard wanted an opportunity to reflect on his leadership approach and develop a clearer understanding of both his strengths and the areas in which he could improve.
This had become particularly important as the Economics team and the wider Pegasus Group had experienced considerable growth over the previous 12 to 18 months. Richard wanted to understand the leadership challenges that can arise during periods of expansion and how he could continue supporting his team effectively as it developed.
He was also keen to learn alongside leaders from other organisations, gaining a broader perspective on the different approaches, challenges and experiences encountered across a range of workplaces.
Richard attended In Professional Development’s face-to-face Senior Leadership Programme in Manchester to evaluate his existing leadership style, strengthen his management capabilities and gain practical approaches that could be applied within his growing team.
The programme provided dedicated time away from the demands of day-to-day project delivery, allowing Richard to reflect on how he leads, communicates and responds to different team members, particularly during periods of increased pressure.
The four-day programme was delivered by two tutors, each leading two days of the training. Their welcoming and informal approach helped create an environment in which participants felt comfortable contributing to discussions, asking questions and sharing their own experiences.
Despite the amount of material covered, Richard felt that the programme was delivered at an appropriate pace. The sessions remained accessible and engaging, with the tutors using practical examples and personal experiences to demonstrate how leadership principles apply within real organisations.
The tutors’ enthusiasm also helped make complex leadership topics easier to understand and relate back to real workplace situations.
The programme gave Richard the opportunity to step back and critically assess his leadership style after more than a decade of managing teams. It reinforced the importance of trusting his judgement while recognising that effective leadership does not mean being able to satisfy every person in every situation.
It also strengthened his understanding of communication as a central part of team performance. Richard recognised that people are more likely to feel valued and contribute effectively when communication is clear, consistent and inclusive.
One of the most valuable reflections was the need to adapt his leadership approach to the individual. The programme highlighted that different team members may require different forms of communication, support and management, particularly when workloads and project pressures increase.
Richard developed a stronger appreciation of the importance of trusting his own experience and judgement. The programme reinforced that leadership involves making difficult decisions and accepting that it will not always be possible to please everyone.
The training emphasised that effective communication is essential for creating a team in which people understand their responsibilities, feel listened to and recognise the value of their contribution.
Richard recognised that there is no single approach that will work for every team member. Understanding individual personalities, preferences and support needs will help him lead more effectively, particularly during demanding projects and periods of organisational growth.
