Management Training Courses

Management training is structured development for people who lead a team, a department or an operation and want to do the job better or gain formal recognition. In the UK, it ranges from single-skill workshops to multi-day programmes covering the whole management role.

Which management course is right for you?

The right management course for you depends on three things: how long you have been managing people, whether you need broad capability or one specific skill and whether you want a formal qualification. The qualification each course leads to also varies, from a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 5 Certificate to a smaller CMI Level 5 Award or no formal qualification at all – the CMI levels section explains the difference.

If you are new to managing people

If you have been managing for less than two years, start with broad grounding rather than a niche topic. The Manager Development Programme covers the core of the role: managing performance, delegating, planning and leading a team. For the step up, read how to become a manager.

If you already manage a team or a function

With three to five years behind you and real responsibility for delivery, you are ready to deepen people management and operational judgement. The Leadership and Management Course suits managers leading a team who want stronger people management skills. If you run a function or a site, look at the Operational Management Course instead.

If you need one specific management skill

If you already manage well but have one clear gap, a short specialist course fixes it faster than a full programme. The AI for Managers Programme runs over two days and leads to a focused CMI Level 5 Award. Finance for Non-Finance Managers builds financial confidence but carries no formal qualification.

If you are moving from management into senior leadership

If your focus has shifted from running a team to shaping strategy, budgets and direction, you have outgrown management training. The Executive Mini MBA Accelerator condenses core business disciplines into five days for people stepping into senior roles. Our leadership courses set out the wider options at this level.

How management training is delivered

In Professional Development delivers its management courses in two formats: live online and in person. The content, tutors and qualification route are the same in both.

Online and virtual management courses

Online management courses run as live, scheduled sessions led by a tutor, not self-paced e-learning. You join a cohort of managers from other organisations for the same taught days as the in-person course, following the same materials. Every open programme on this page is available this way. Where a course leads to a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification, that route is identical online. Sessions run within normal working hours.

In-person management courses in London and Manchester

In-person management courses run over consecutive days at a training venue in London or Manchester. The taught element is condensed into two to four days. Any qualification work is completed afterwards in your own time. To bring a group together on your own dates, the same programmes can run in-house for one organisation.

Why choose In Professional Development for management training

In Professional Development runs management courses for UK managers as both live online cohorts and in-person programmes in London and Manchester. The focus is professional development for people already in a management role: practical, work-based and built to fit around a job rather than replace it.

Most, though not all, of the programmes on this page carry a route to a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification. The route differs by course and by level: four lead to a CMI Level 5 Certificate, one to a CMI Level 5 Award, one to no formal qualification and one has an optional postgraduate certificate route. The section above sets out which is which.

Why UK Managers Are Underprepared
Why UK Managers Are Underprepared
Recent studies have highlighted a significant issue within UK organisations: a substantial proportion of managers lack formal training.

Four of In Professional Development’s management courses lead to a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 5 Certificate in Management and Leadership, one leads to a CMI Level 5 Award and one leads to no formal qualification. Every CMI qualification on these courses, whether a Certificate or an Award, is included in the course fee. The AI for Managers Programme leads to a CMI Level 5 Award, a smaller, more focused credential. Finance for Non-Finance Managers leads to no formal qualification.

The Executive Mini MBA Accelerator has a separate optional route to a postgraduate certificate validated by the University of Chester. The Chartered Management Institute is a chartered professional body and awarding organisation, not a regulatory body. Every CMI Certificate and Award is earned by completing written assignment work after the taught days.

A Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Certificate is the larger, broader credential, covering general management across a range of subjects. A CMI Award is smaller and focused on a single subject. Both are real CMI qualifications at the same level: an Award is narrower in scope, not lower in standard. Both are earned the same way, through written assignment work submitted after the taught days. For how the CMI levels and qualification sizes fit together, see our guide to the difference between CMI Levels 5 and 7.

Management training is for people who lead a team, a department or a function, or who are about to take on that responsibility for the first time. The courses suit new and first-line managers, experienced managers deepening their people management and operational judgement, plus specialists moving into a management role. Learning and development teams also use them to develop a group of managers together. How much management experience you already have decides which course fits.

Management courses are delivered in two formats: online through live virtual sessions, or in person in London and Manchester. Virtual sessions are scheduled, facilitator-led and run with a cohort rather than as self-paced e-learning. In-person courses run over consecutive days at a training venue. Where a course leads to a CMI qualification, that route is the same in both formats. In-house delivery for a single organisation is also available and is covered separately below.

A management course should cover the core skills every manager uses: managing performance, delegating, giving feedback, planning and prioritising work, leading and motivating a team, handling difficult conversations, budgeting and decision-making. Stronger programmes also build self-awareness and the shift in mindset from doing the work to leading the people who do it. Our guide to the essential management skills for aspiring managers breaks down what each one looks like in practice and how to develop it.

Management courses run for two to four taught days, depending on the programme. Shorter specialist courses take two days. Broader programmes that lead to a CMI Level 5 Certificate run for three or four days. Where a course leads to a CMI Certificate or Award, there is also written assignment work to complete after the taught days, which you submit to earn the qualification.

Yes, CMI Level 5 courses assume you already manage people or a function. Level 5 is aimed at practising managers, not aspiring ones, so you are expected to have real day-to-day responsibility for a team, a budget or an operation. The entry expectation varies by programme, from managers in their first two years in the role up to around five years. If you do not yet manage anyone, a Level 3 team-leader qualification is a better place to start.

Yes, any of the manager programmes can be delivered in-house for one organisation as a single cohort. The content is built from the standard programme outline and then adapted to your structure, terminology and the decisions your managers face. Programme length follows the open course, usually two to four taught days, plus assignment time where a CMI qualification is included. Delivery is at your premises or a venue you choose, on dates set around your operational calendar. The section on management development programmes above covers group size, or you can request a quote.
