How Fran Gill, Regional Operations Manager – North, NHS Blood and Transplant, gained a CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice – achieved through our Senior Leadership Programme.
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) plays a vital role in saving and improving lives by providing safe blood, organs, and tissues to hospitals across the UK. With over 5,500 staff in diverse roles - from healthcare professionals to support services - NHSBT promotes a workplace built on the values of Caring, Expert and Quality. Committed to development, recognition and innovation, it offers a supportive environment where individuals can thrive and build meaningful careers.
The value of the CMI Level 7 Certificate is that it’s a recognised, high-level qualification that you can put on your CV, and others can immediately see the standard you’ve achieved. While we do a lot of internal training, having something accredited externally gives it real credibility. It’s recognised across different organisations and industries, which really helps to validate the skills and learning you’ve gained.
The biggest impact has been how I approach my team. The assignment on strategy helped me think differently about how to implement and drive strategy within my region. It’s not just about understanding the strategy but actually making it happen. It’s also changed my mindset – how I lead, how I think strategically, and how I manage and develop others in the team.
It shows that I’m committed to my own development and capable of working at this level. If I go for other roles, it gives external recognition that I’ve studied and developed myself strategically. It’s also kept my learning active – I’ve picked up new skills and perspectives, and I’ve even been encouraging my team to do the same. It shows there are no big gaps on my CV and that I believe in continuous development.
The support was excellent – it made a real difference. The extra learning days where you could go through the assignments were incredibly helpful. I joined WhatsApp groups, attended drop-in sessions, and always received regular emails about support opportunities. I even got feedback on referred assignments before resubmitting, which was so valuable. Compared to my previous qualification experience, the support this time was miles ahead. With how busy my role is, I honestly couldn’t have completed it without that level of help.
Mindset Shift – I’ve realised that strategic leadership isn’t something you either have or don’t; you can develop it. That was a big breakthrough.
Practical Implementation – The training helped me focus on the “how” of delivering strategy, not just understanding it. That’s made a difference in the North of England region I lead.
Wider Perspective – Working with people from other industries during the course opened my eyes to new ways of thinking and problem-solving, which has been great for me and my team.
