The Role of the Managing Director – Southbourne Rubber

What challenges were you looking to address?

As Managing Director Designate, Rob was preparing to move from leading within a specific function to taking responsibility for the performance and direction of the entire business.

Rather than addressing one immediate challenge, he wanted to develop the broader skills, commercial perspective and leadership capability required to make the transition successfully.

“I wanted to make sure I had the breadth of skills and perspective needed to lead the whole business, rather than just run my current function well”

The programme also provided an opportunity to reflect on the expectations of the Managing Director role and identify areas where he could continue to develop.

What was the solution you opted for?

Rob attended The Role of the Managing Director Programme in London to broaden his understanding of the role and gain exposure to leadership approaches beyond those he had developed within the Aerospace and Defence sector.

“I signed up to broaden my horizons ahead of stepping into the MD role and to learn new skills and approaches beyond what I had built up operating within the sector”

The programme allowed him to explore the practical responsibilities of an MD, while developing a more rounded understanding of how to lead strategy, people and business performance.

What was the approach to the training?

The programme was delivered through an engaging and energetic approach, combining expert insight with practical discussion and relevant business examples.

“The tutor was engaging, knowledgeable and high energy. The sessions were genuinely insightful throughout and a real joy to attend”

The tutor’s experience helped bring the programme content to life, making the concepts accessible and directly relevant to the challenges faced by senior leaders preparing to take responsibility for an entire organisation.

What value did InPD bring?

The programme gave Rob structured frameworks for thinking about how a business should be led, helping him move beyond a function-specific mindset and consider the organisation as a whole.

“Learning models such as the Entrepreneurial Operating System was incredibly insightful. It gave me a structured way to think about running a business rather than just a function”

It also strengthened his understanding of stakeholder communication and highlighted the importance of aligning emerging technologies, including AI, with the wider strategy and culture of the business.

“The sessions on AI were genuinely eye-opening, both in terms of how leaders can integrate AI into the business and how its adoption should align with strategy and culture”

What were the 3 key takeaways that the training impacted you and your organisation?

Structured Business Leadership

Learning frameworks such as the Entrepreneurial Operating System gave Rob a more structured approach to leading and operating an entire business, rather than focusing solely on an individual function.

Effective Stakeholder Engagement

The programme reinforced the importance of clear, purposeful communication and provided practical insight into how senior leaders can engage stakeholders more effectively.

Strategic AI Adoption

Rob developed a stronger understanding of how AI can be integrated into a business, while ensuring its adoption supports the organisation’s strategy, people and culture.
