Effective leadership is as much about persuading others that you have the skills and the character to lead effectively as it is doing so.
Achieving a qualification on a Chartered Management Institute (CMI)-accredited course is one way to accomplish the above. Qualifications from courses provided or accredited by this professional body inform hiring managers that the candidate in front of them has the skills to perform successfully in the role.
Below, we discuss CMI qualifications in more depth and what they can help you achieve. The post features testimonials from people who have participated in our own CMI courses, and we discuss some of the courses we run at In Professional Development, including a brief look at the entry requirements for studying on a CMI-accredited course.
What is a CMI qualification?
A CMI qualification is a qualification accredited by the Chartered Management Institute, the benchmark professional body for standards in the management and leadership industry. Participants in the courses receive learning they can apply directly in the workplace, will increase their productivity, and transform them into a conscious leader.
Is CMI a recognised qualification?
Technically, ‘CMI’ refers to the body that awards the qualification, but CMI qualifications are nationally recognised. The presence of a CMI qualification on your CV is a big advantage.
Are CMI qualifications worth it?
Taking the time to study for a CMI qualification is a worthwhile investment. The institute designs its qualifications to equip leadership and management professionals with the tools, support, and guidance to tackle professional challenges successfully. Not only this, but the CMI is also the only Chartered body in leadership and management. Its qualifications are a benchmark for global excellence.
What are the different CMI levels?
It’s possible to study for eight different levels of CMI qualification, and you can study for awards, certificates, or diplomas. As well as a brief outline of each qualification, below we shine a spotlight on Level 5 and Level 7 qualifications, for which you can study with us here at In Professional Development.
What CMI Level 5 qualification can help you achieve professionally
Level 5 courses will help you to achieve different things, depending on the course you choose. Ultimately, you’ll be able to lead teams more effectively for your organisation because the courses will foster the skills and build your knowledge to tackle the different challenges of your role, and naturally, they’ll prepare you to progress to a higher level of management.
If you take a CMI Level 5 course in leadership and management, for example, you’ll learn how to apply the use of enquiry so that you develop your capabilities as a leader; be able to incorporate leadership and management development into your workplace in a practical way and solidify it; and build the skills to leverage and influence others, acting as a ‘silent leader’.
A Level 5 coaching and mentoring course adopts a different approach. You’ll develop stronger communication skills, and you’ll become more open to greater opportunities for learning and personal development. You’ll strengthen your self-awareness, self-confidence, and leadership ability, and you’ll form the ability to confirm whether other coaches or mentors in the organisation have the skills, knowledge, and ethical understanding to deliver results.
Your organisation will benefit greatly, too, from your attendance on the course. Enrolling on the courses demonstrates your commitment to helping others build their skills and develop, and the organisation can look forward to higher levels of productivity and better organisational performance. Your training will facilitate any changes the organisation believes are necessary to its culture or management, and it can reduce costs and grow the business further.
In our blog post on Level 5 CMI qualifications, you can find out more about how a qualification can help you professionally.
What a CMI Level 7 can help you achieve professionally
The focus of Level 7 qualifications moves away from direct management and towards more strategic aspects of management and on yielding results for the organisation. Each course will have different results in terms of how they will enhance your career development.
A CMI Level 7 Senior Leadership course, for example, will allow you to develop an appreciation of how strategic leaders will encounter different expectations from others than operational leaders, as well as to learn the most valuable skills, traits, and behaviours to lead successfully. You’ll learn how to develop strategies so that you can review your performance and gain insight into your behaviours, which then paves the way for you to take action to improve; and to devise and implement strategies, applying the skills you’ve acquired on the course.
A CMI Level 7 Coaching and Mentorship course will build on existing skills and expand your understanding of coaching and how it works further. The training will teach you to instil a culture of coaching and mentoring into your organisation, show you how coaching relates to an organisation’s goals, and introduce you to the tools you can utilise to monitor the impact of the coaching. You’ll also gain knowledge of how conflict arises and how to manage it.
These are two examples of how CMI Level 7 qualifications can help you professionally. If you’re interested in going on a CMI Level 7 course, you’ll find our blog post in which we dive into greater detail about the benefits of this level of qualification.
Who do CMI qualifications suit most?
The different qualifications are customised to suit management professionals at specific levels. Essentially, CMI qualifications are for professionals who wish to improve their management skills to get the most out of their teams and become better leaders for their organisation.
CMI courses are highly versatile. Management professionals from many different industries or backgrounds can study them. Our CMI-accredited courses have served professionals in public sector management roles, not-for-profit organisations, healthcare, and education. The courses will also help leaders working in corporate and commercial roles.
We’ve been speaking very highly of our CMI-accredited courses, but we thought we’d share a few testimonials with you from professionals who have participated in our courses so that you can understand the advantages that course participants have gained from them in their own words.
‘I have to say that teaching my colleagues about the six ego states has helped our team massively. I now find my team catching themselves when they’re entering a negative state and they then take the necessary steps to modify this. The six ego states model has been incredibly beneficial to our working environment and as a result, my team can now identify negativity triggers within their role and resolve their issues quickly, with very little input from me.’
– Ashley Aiken, Oxford Academic Science Health Network
‘I found the change curve and ways of managing change very interesting. This element of learning will deeply impact my role and my dealings with team members and wider staff.
‘… The theory of managing change and the stages which can be recognised will aid my future dealings of change and have already had a positive impact when engaging others with new developments. This has improved my empathy and understanding and challenged me to manage change in new ways which has been met with positivity and aided my team to move towards “acceptance” more easily.”
– Laura Rees, West Midlands Pension Fund
‘Attending this course has opened an awareness and understanding of the actions that in the past I have promoted and the tools to change them allowing my team to be empowered and high performing.’
– Rachel Tata, Story Homes
‘The learning certainly addressed the initial objectives set out by the company. I welcomed the opportunity to attend the programme and for me, it has been useful to stop and take a step back to understand how and why people, including myself, behave a certain way and what to do to maximise the level of cooperation and success in an organisation. It has also given me the confidence to accept that I am also a leader.’
– Puneet Grewal, Glennmont Partners

What are the overall benefits of a CMI qualification?
Completing a CMI-accredited course prepares you with skills that you can employ immediately in your role. You’ll feel more confident in your abilities and, just as importantly, strike prospective employers, or those of anyone who has the authority to award you a promotion, as being a more credible candidate and capable of handling more responsibility.
The courses will help you to discover and define your style of management. As a natural and indirect outcome of this professional training, you’ll be able to cope with the pressures and challenges of management, and, in turn, reduce stress. It’s especially important to be able to lead effectively in times of change, and these courses prime you for that.
Requirements may vary, depending on the course you choose, but generally, you should have three years of experience in management at a middle management level for Level 5 courses, or at senior management level for Level 7. To study on a Level 8 course, you must be a C-suite management professional.
