What challenges were you looking to address?

As Chief Fire Officer, Shondell is responsible for the strategic direction, leadership and fiscal management of AFRS. With the organisation looking to expand its training capabilities, he wanted to explore how AI could support change while building confidence among colleagues who may still feel uncertain about new technology.

A particular focus was understanding how AI could help improve efficiency without removing the professional oversight and judgement required within an emergency services environment.

“I wanted to see how I could leverage my AI understanding to lead a change management initiative within the AFRS”

What was the solution you opted for?

Shondell attended the virtual AI for Directors and Leaders Programme to strengthen his understanding of how AI can be introduced strategically and responsibly within an organisation.

The programme supported his ambitions to explore new approaches to training, including the potential use of virtual reality as AFRS looks for more efficient alternatives to increasingly resource-intensive realistic training.

“AI can be beneficial in reducing the time taken to perform and deliver certain tasks”

What was the approach to the training?

The training combined practical AI knowledge with a strong focus on the considerations leaders need to make when implementing the technology within their organisations.

Shondell particularly valued the expertise of the tutors and the practical insight they were able to bring to the sessions.

“The tutors were very adept and knowledgeable about the subject and offered great insights”

What value did InPD bring?

The programme gave Shondell a clearer framework for approaching AI at leadership level, moving beyond individual tools towards governance, strategy and responsible implementation.

It also reinforced the importance of balancing the efficiencies AI can create with human oversight, validation and professional judgement.

“Proper oversight and professional judgement must be utilised to validate the information”

What were the 3 key takeaways that the training impacted you and your organisation?

Strong AI Governance

The programme reinforced the importance of establishing clear governance around AI, ensuring its use is responsible, controlled and supported by appropriate human oversight.

Building an AI Strategy

Shondell developed a stronger understanding of how to build strategies around AI adoption, helping AFRS consider how the technology could support wider organisational change and future training delivery.

More Effective Prompting

Developing efficient prompting techniques provided a practical way to improve the quality and usefulness of AI outputs, helping ensure the technology can be applied more effectively to everyday tasks.
